Pavel has arrived at Bruno´s home to do his afternoon job; pealing vegetables for dinner and serving the food. Pavel hoped that today would be a good day for him, which meant not getting in trouble. Pavel headed towards the entrance to Bruno´s home until he heard someone call him.” Hey, you!” that person shouted. Pavel quickly turned around and he saw Lieutenant Kotler, Gretel and Bruno having a conversation. “Come over here you –” said Kotler, using a word that extremely offended Pavel, but he knew that no one cares. He ran to the lieutenant because he did not want to get in trouble. “Take this little man to the storage shed at the back of the main house. Lined up along a side wall are some old tires. He will select one and you are to carry it wherever he asks you to, is that understood?” Pavel did not want to get into trouble, so he bowed down and said “Yes, sir” in a quiet voice. Afterwards Lieutenant told Pavel to wash his hands and used the same word as before which offended him even more. He knew that he couldn’t do anything about it. “Off you go then” said Lieutenant Kotler. Pavel rushed to the shed with Bruno. He took the tire that Bruno chose, and he dragged it along the ground till he got it to the tree. Pavel was extremely tired because the tire was quite heavy, and he was starving. Next he went into the house and he started peeling the vegetables for dinner. Pavel saw Bruno climbing up and down the tree, tying ropes around the tire and after he was done, he began swinging. Bruno started going dangerously high and in a blink of an eye Pavel saw Bruno fall of his swing. He rushed outside to help the boy. He took Bruno across the lawn and into the kitchen. Pavel put the boy on a chair. “Where´s Mother?”, asked Bruno. Pavel told him that she has not returned yet. He answered more of the boy’s questions and afterwards he put a bandage on Bruno. Some, time later Bruno asked Pavel how he knew what to do. Pavel at first hesitated to tell him because he did not want to talk about it but soon, he decided to tell Bruno.” Before I came here, I practiced as a doctor”, he said. Then Bruno was asked about what he wants to be, and he told Pavel that he wants to be a explorer. After a talk between the boy and Pavel, Bruno´s mom arrived at the house. Pavel got extremely scared because he knew that she would be very mad if she saw him having any kind of contact with Bruno. “What on earth happened to you”, said Bruno´s mother. Bruno told his mother everything that happened and how Pavel has helped him but then his mother told Bruno to go to his room. After Bruno got to his room, his mom told Pavel thank you and she also said that she will not tell the Commandant what happened. Pavel felt relieved because he was so sure that he would be in trouble, but he was wrong. He continued peeling the vegetables for dinner.
